Old Kingdom is a three-piece, heavy, grungy, high-energy, high-volume band from Portland, Oregon.
Prior to Old Kingdom, guitar player Jonathan Andersen often sang in his bands Ferocious Eagle and The Maybe Happening. Adam Jelsing played drums in The Ax and jumped at the opportunity to play drums, alongside Jon, in Ferocious Eagle. With the driving force behind Ferocious Eagle (Greg Dalbey) moving away in fall of 2009, Jon and Adam realized they enjoyed writing heavier music together. After a few songs were nearly complete, they started playing out as a two-piece. Sounds were mostly instrumental and sometimes included vocal ideas in the spirit of C Average, Trans AM, TAD, and random mathematic equations. A few monikers filled their early flyers: Ferocious, Fjords, Supergiant, and with the addition of Kevin Philpott on bass, Old Kingdom was established.
A couple years passed, filled with shows at any and every bar in Portland. During this time, their self-titled debut album was slowly being recorded, mixed, and mastered. It was finally released on Compact Disc Digital Audio in 2014.
After supporting the release of the album and with a son on the way, Kevin decided to take what would become a permanent break from OK. Fortunately, Adam’s longtime friend, earlobe enthusiast, and bassist Aaron Powell (Belt of Vapor/Sons of Huns) had recently moved to Portland and was able to join the Kingdom. His addition brought new enthusiasm, inspiration and focus. Now with two singers, vocals have become a constant. A more straightforward, thoughtful approach to song structure has taken shape. Still maintaining a collective effort with no single songwriter. Old Kingdom’s sound has coalesced in the form of ’flowers.’
